How to Set Up Your Phone as a Key for Your Ford
Ford Connected Services and Features
The newest Ford vehicles come with innovative connected services that add new convenience to vehicle ownership. Remote features in the FordPass app let owners monitor their vehicles and use features like remote start and lock/unlock tools.
Many of these features are available with or without a Wi-Fi hotspot, and they are accessible, even if you are far away from your vehicle. Setting up the Ford Phone As a Key includes a few steps, and the Hilltop Ford team can help drivers from Crockett to El Cerrito set it up on their Android or Apple smartphones.
Necessities for the Ford Phone As a Key Feature
All Ford Mustang Mach-E trims have the Phone As a Key feature. Many 2021 and new Ford models also have the convenient feature including the Ford EcoSport, Ranger, and Mustang.
Before you set up the Phone As a Key feature, you must meet the minimum requirements. The first requirement is having the FordPass app on your device. You can find it in your phone’s app store. After you load it on your phone, you need an active account.
Log into the app and add your vehicle to it. You’ll want to be sure that your vehicle has the Phone As a Key feature. If so, set up facial or fingerprint recognition and a passcode so you can access the app quickly. Enable the Customer Connectivity Settings and activate the FordPass Connect modem.
The Ford Phone As a Key feature only works when you have Bluetooth 4.2 connected and running, and your phone must have at least iOS 16.0 or Android 8.0 operating systems.
Why Use Your Phone as a Key
If your phone meets the requirements, you’ll have to determine whether you have FordPass App 4.X or 5.X Experience. The 5.X setup is faster, as you log into the app, select the Vehicle screen, then the Setup button in the “Make this Phone a Key” box. You’ll receive a prompt from Bluetooth so that you can tap the Pair Device button. Hit OK, then hit the Copy option. Paste the code and Pair your phone.
If you have the 4. X Experience, the process is longer. After opening the FordPass app, go to the Home screen, then select “Setup Phone as a Key” and Set Up Now. You’ll receive an authentication screen where you’ll select Continue. You’ll use your face, fingerprint, or passcode to authenticate your activity.
Next, you’ll name the key and tap Next. After the key downloads, you Copy and Continue to pair your phone and vehicle’s Bluetooth. Then Pair and OK. If all goes well, you’ll see a confirmation screen.
