2019 Ford Edge Uses AI for Safety

What comes to mind when you think of artificial intelligence? Perhaps robot movies, perhaps not fuel efficiency. But when it comes to the 2019 Ford Edge, AI is used for just that, to improve driving efficiency.

New for the 2019 Ford Edge is what Ford is calling all-wheel-drive disconnect, a system that helps improve traction and reduce gas usage compared to the previous Edge model. All-wheel-drive disconnect works by automatically switching between two-wheel and all-wheel drive in a fraction of a second. It's able to do this by using a form of artificial intelligence that can (gulp) calculate faster than the human brain. The AI system reviews specific driving information including wheel slip, road conditions, vehicle speed, windshield wiper usage and outside temperature, and then responds appropriately by applying the necessary level of traction.

By being able to just about instantaneously identify various driving conditions, the new 2019 Ford Edge is able to provide necessary traction when needed and lessen it when it's no longer needed. It's an AI system that successfully reduces fuel-consumption and improves overall vehicle performance.

Scott Beiring, Ford driveline applications supervisor, likens this exciting new technology to being able to read the weather report and plan your outfit accordingly. Beiring states,

"It's like you or I determining what to wear based on reading a weather forecast, where we're going, the time of year and looking outside. In the case of the new Edge, just because the windshield wipers are on doesn't mean all-wheel drive is going to engage. The algorithm makes the call based on a variety of things that are happening – but much faster than a person could process. There are similar systems out there, but none quite like this."

All-wheel drive equipped 2019 Ford Edge models have an EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway/23 mpg combined, along with a few additional and notable fuel-saving tech features, including:

  • An 8-speed automatic transmission, which decreases engine rpm for improved fuel economy for highway driving
  • Active transmission warm-up, a process which reclaims heat energy to warm up the transmission faster
  • Auto Start-Stop helps save fuel by turning off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and automatically restarting it when the driver releases the brake pedal
  • Deceleration fuel shut-off, which stops fuel flow to the engine when the vehicle is reducing speed
  • Exhaust gas recirculation reduces harmful emissions and increases efficiency by allowing a larger throttle position, thereby reducing pumping losses

If you're in the market for a new vehicle, don't overlook the 2019 Ford Edge, especially the performance enhanced 2019 Ford Edge ST. The 2019 Ford Edge is an SUV that's advanced gracefully into the future, by thoughtfully incorporating artificial intelligence to improve performance and driving safety.
