2018 Ford Escape: Connect Phone via Bluetooth, Use Apple Car Play

What good is smart technology and convenience if you don't know how to use it? Not much. In this edition of Hilltop How To's, learn from Hazi, Hilltop Ford Sales Team Member, on how to synch your phone with Bluetooth and set up Apple CarPlay on a 2018 Ford Escape.

Set up Bluetooth for iPhone

Follow these step-by-step instructions on how to pair your iPhone to your Ford Escape.

  1. Turn on your vehicle.
  2. On your iPhone, go to Settings > press Bluetooth > make sure your Bluetooth is turned on.
  3. On your Escape's digital display, press the phone icon > Add phone > Discover Other Bluetooth Devices > Continue. At this point your Escape will search for available connections. Once your Escape finds your iPhone, your iPhone's name will appear on your Escape's digital display. Press your iPhone's name.
  4. Once your Escape finds and connects to your iPhone, you will have to confirm the connection by comparing a six-digit pin number. This number will appear on your Escape's digital display and on your iPhone. If the numbers match, press Pair on your iPhone and Yes on your Escape's digital display.
  5. On your iPhone, you will be asked to Allow contacts to synch to your vehicle. Press Allow. This gives your Escape the ability to access your iPhone's saved contacts, which will make it easier to send and receive phone calls directly from your Escape.
  6. Once paired, your Escape's digital display will ask if you want to connect to 911 Assist. Although this is voluntary we highly recommend doing so, because in the event of an accident your Escape will automatically dial 911 to help you. After deciding to turn on 911 Assist, press Finish.
  7. A message will appear on your Escape's digital display saying it does not have access to your text messages, this is OK. This is where Apple CarPlay comes in.

How to Use Apple CarPlay

You can send and receive text messages using Apple CarPlay, as well as access your music, navigation, and other compatible apps.

  1. Using your iPhone's USB cord, connect your phone to your Escape via the USB port located below your Escape's climate control.
  2. Once your iPhone is plugged in, your iPhone will vibrate and a message will pop up on your iPhone's screen asking if you want to allow Apple CarPlay with SYNC 3. Press Allow.
  3. On your Escape's digital display, press Continue > Agree.

Since you have already connected your phone using Bluetooth, from here on out, all you have to do to access Apple CarPlay is plug in your iPhone to your Escape. One advantage of using Apple CarPlay is that everything is accessible via voice command. You can speak to Siri on your Escape just as you would on your iPhone. And, you can use the steering wheel controls so you never have to take your hands off the wheel. SYNC 3 allows your iPhone to work with your Escape, so you will have access to the same features you do on your iPhone - contacts, text messages, navigation, music, and more.
